With the rise of longer and more frequent journeys, this spirit of hospitality gradually evolved — from simple kindness into a valued service. The first inns were modest in both form and comfort, found along busy roads and in growing towns, where travelers shared a common room and paid for their stay not with money, but with goods from their trade.

The earliest known hospitality establishments on the territory of modern-day Croatia date back to Roman times, when simple taverns served food and drink to passersby. Yet the true beginnings of Croatian hotelkeeping emerged between 1844 and 1884, an era shaped by the age of steamships and railways, when travel became not only a necessity — but an experience.
