Dubrovnik in a Day
A Perfect 24-Hour Itinerary
Dubrovnik in a Day
Discover Dubrovnik's rich heritage and stunning vistas on this carefully curated one-day itinerary. From medieval walls to tranquil island escapes, every moment of your day will be filled with magic. There is a lot to see in a day – so let's get started.
Stroll the Stradun and Walk the City Walls
Start your Dubrovnik day at the iconic Pile Gate, the grand entrance to Dubrovnik's Old City. Wander along Stradun, the limestone-paved main street, as the city comes to life. Stop at a charming pavement café for a cappuccino and breakfast to fuel your day.
Next, embark on a walk along the iconic City Walls. This roughly two-kilometre (just over a mile) circuit offers incredible panoramic views of the shimmering Adriatic Sea and the terracotta rooftops below. Pause at Minčeta Tower for the most stunning (and highest) vantage point in the city.
Top Tip: Stay cool while soaking up the sights! Pack a bottle of water and tackle the City Walls early in the morning to beat both the crowds and the scorching midday sun.
Dive into History
Descend from the walls and explore Dubrovnik's historical landmarks. Visit the Rector's Palace, a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles, and imagine the grandeur of Dubrovnik's past as a maritime republic. Then, head to the nearby Franciscan Monastery, home to one of Europe's oldest functioning pharmacies.
And round off your dip into culture with a visit to an art gallery or catch an exhibition.
Top Tip: The DU Pass city card offers great value and entrance into the majority of the city's cultural sights.
Escape to Lokrum Island
Escape the midday heat with a short ferry ride to the island of Lokrum. This serene retreat is just a short 15-minute boat ride away from the Old City and offers shaded paths, free-roaming peacocks, and the tranquil Dead Sea salt lake for a refreshing swim.
Explore the ruins of a Benedictine monastery or catch the Game of Thrones visitor centre or simply relax in nature.
Top Tip: Climb to Fort Royal at the island's highest point for breath-taking panoramic views of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic.
Savour the Flavours of Dubrovnik
Return to the mainland for a leisurely lunch at a harbour side konoba (tavern) or in one of the many eateries inside the city walls. Savour black risotto, a local specialty made with cuttlefish ink, paired with a crisp glass of local wine. To walk off that lunch why not visit the impressive Lovrjenac Fortress, an iconic symbol of freedom, or Libertas.
Top Tip: Go for the full Dubrovnik eating experience with a traditional dessert – Rozata.
Marvel at Dubrovnik from Mount Srđ
Take the cable car to the summit of Mount Srđ as the golden hour bathes Dubrovnik in a warm glow. You are pretty much guaranteed a glorious sunset every evening. The view of the city, the islands and the Adriatic below is a sight to behold. This is a photo opportunity like no other.
Top Tip: Bring a camera or smartphone with plenty of storage – the sweeping views of Dubrovnik, the islands, and the Adriatic at golden hour are postcard-perfect!
Wander Lantern-Lit Streets
As night falls, let the softly lit streets of the Old City guide you to a cosy wine or cocktail bar. Toast to a day filled with unforgettable memories and the timeless allure of Dubrovnik. Unwind and reflect on your Dubrovnik adventures with an evening meal of freshly caught seafood paired with a glass of locally produced wine. If time allows, extend your evening by enjoying the enchanting ambiance of a concert nestled within the city's historic stone walls.
Top Tip: Ask your server for wine recommendations—local varieties like Malvasija Dubrovacka perfectly complement seafood dishes.
